چکیده

The development of the intestinal flora in newborn infants starts during birth when the aseptic gastrointestinal tract of the fetus is inoculated by bacteria from the mother’s intestinal and vaginal flora. This leads to a diverse flora comprising Bifidobacteria, Clostridia, and gram positive Cocci (Heine et al., 1998). After this first inoculation, the flora changes rapidly, presumably under the influence of the diet. In entirely breast-fed infants the flora is predominately Bifidobacteria whereas in formula-fed infants the flora is more diverse (Harmsen et al., 2000; Figure 1). The introduction of solid food leads to the disappearance of the predominance of Bifidobacteria in breast-fed infants and at 12 months of age the flora starts to resemble that of adults in number and composition (Stark and Lee, 1982).

Application of prebiotics in infant foods.

The rationale for supplementing an infant formula with prebiotics is to obtain a bifidogenic effect and the implied advantages of a 'breast-fed-like' flora. So far, the bifidogenic effect of oligofructose and inulin has been demonstrated in animals and in adults, of oligofructose in infants and toddlers and of a long-chain inulin (10 %) and galactooligosaccharide (90 %) mixture in term and pret...

Oligosaccharides in infant formula: more evidence to validate the role of prebiotics.

The gastrointestinal (GI) microbiota differs between breast-fed and classic infant formula-fed infants. Breast milk is rich in prebiotic oligosaccharides (OS) and may also contain some probiotics, but scientific societies do not recommend the addition of prebiotic OS or probiotics to standard infant formula. Nevertheless, many infant formula companies often add one or the other or both. Differe...

Supplementation of infant formula with probiotics and/or prebiotics: a systematic review and comment by the ESPGHAN committee on nutrition.

Infant formulae are increasingly supplemented with probiotics, prebiotics, or synbiotics despite uncertainties regarding their efficacy. The present article, developed by the Committee on Nutrition of the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition, systematically reviews published evidence related to the safety and health effects of the administration of formula...

Probiotics and prebiotics in infant nutrition.

The human colonic microflora has a central role in health and disease, being unique in its complexity and range of functions. As such, dietary modulation is important for improved gut health, especially during the highly-sensitive stage of infancy. Diet can affect the composition of the gut microflora through the availability of different substrates for bacterial fermentation. Differences in gu...

Synbiotics, probiotics or prebiotics in infant formula for full term infants: a systematic review

BACKGROUND Synbiotics, probiotics or prebiotics are being added to infant formula to promote growth and development in infants. Previous reviews (2007 to 2011) on term infants given probiotics or prebiotics focused on prevention of allergic disease and food hypersensitivity. This review focused on growth and clinical outcomes in term infants fed only infant formula containing synbiotics, probio...

Probiotics, Prebiotics, and Synbiotics for the Prevention of Necrotizing Enterocolitis.

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a devastating intestinal disease in preterm infants characterized by barrier disruption, intestinal microbial dysbiosis, and persistent inflammation of the colon, which results in high mortality rates. Current strategies used to manage this disease are not sufficient, although the use of human breast milk reduces the risk of NEC. Mother's milk is regarded as a...
